Originally founded in 1542 and first named San Miguel El Grande, the town was renamed San Miguel de Allende in 1826 to honor General Ignacio Allende who was a hero for his part in fighting against the Spanish in the war for independence. The town is located about 3 hours north of Mexico City in the state of Guanajuato. The beautiful colonial architecture and charming streets are best explored on foot. The town is well suited for tourist and has a great selection of hotels, restaurants and art galleries. In 2008, San Miguel de Allende was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. [View Photos]
